Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura

Clinical History:

A 47 year old male patient of Indian origin, with diagnosis of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) was presented to Vaidyaratnam Dr. Raghavan Ramankutty in the August of 2017. He was diagnosed with ITP in month of June 2017.

The initial presenting symptoms before the diagnosis were

  • Sudden development of reddish spots over the arms and legs, which increased rapidly over 24 hrs
  • Frequent bleeding of the gums

Patient was immediately admitted in the Intensive care unit due to decreased platelets. He was infused fresh platelets, Vitamin k, Vitamin B12, prescribed high dose oral steroids for 5 days followed by tapering over 15 days.

He again developed similar symptoms after 3 weeks of stopping steroid. He was then, prescribed oral steroids (60 mg/day) and Dapsone (100 mg/day) for controlling ITP for 28 days. This time he started developing side effects of steroids.

Past History:

Patient has history of left sided Bell’s palsy in the year 2015. He also has history of healed fracture of left femur in the year 2006

DAT (Dathathreya Ayurveda therapy) Intervention

The treatment started after pulse examination by Dr. Raghavan Ramankutty to establish the accurate diagnosis, severity of the disease, prognosis, and therapy plan.

Patient was prescribed a kashyam (liquid herbal decoction) to be made every day at home and Specific herbal powder medicines in accordance to his constitution.

Results and Discussion

Patient has stopped taking Dapsone and is completely off the steroids now. He has not developed any of the symptoms again. The quality of life has improved significantly.
